Many factors play into shallow breathing (e.g., mouth breathing, obesity); the goal is to make them all positive. Our most important functions and organs rely on a consistent supply of oxygen. Follow these guidelines to relearn the art of breathing:
The Negative Effects of Shallow Breathing
The most important connections to breathing include the digestive and nervous system. When these systems are negatively impacted, conditions like depression, anxiety, chronic fatigue, digestive diseases, a weakened immune system, hypertension and excess stress hormone production can develop.
How to Identify Bad Breathing Habits
Mouth breathing is typically associated with excess weight because it requires more effort to breathe through the nose. By not expanding your diaphragm, you’re only utilizing one-third of your lungs’ capacity; this is considered a stress-triggered way to breathe because it is short and quick.
Become a Lean and Mean Respiratory Machine
Rely more on expanding your lower abdominals and diaphragm. Repeat this process in order to make the mind-body connection stronger also less susceptible to chronic conditions.
